AFFAIRS OF CHINA.

CONFIDENTIAL.

[17169]

No. 1.

REGO 21 MAY 09:

373

[May 4.]

SECTION 1.

(No. 86.)

Sir Edward Grey to Sir J. Jordan.

Foreign Office, May 4, 1909,

(Telegraphic.) P.

MACAO. See my telegram No. 81 of the 1st instant. Yesterday Portuguese Minister further stated to me that Chinese Government had not up to the present confirmed the arrangement made at Lisbon by the Chinese Minister at Paris. The Marquis de Soveral also said that he felt uneasy at the fact that, although Portuguese had duly carried out the terms of that arrangement, the Chinese had not evacuated the posts recently occupied by them, which they had agreed to do under that instrument.
